Kaus's dystopia???

Hmmm... Mickey Kaus is single and could do his job from any place in the coutry he chooses... and lives in LA. So I'm not sure that an aversion to salsa music and Dominican starting pitchers is what motivates Kaus's position on immigration.

From what I've read, his concerns are the following:

  • An immigration policy that includes amnesty will send the message that if you can just cross the US border, you can eventually become a citizen.
  • This will lead to even more illegal immigration, with several negative externalities, including:

    • More people taking wild risks in order to get across the border.
    • Strains on public services serving those who come here with nothing.
    • A de facto permanent underclass.

  • That illegal immigrants will not assimilate into American culture, and maintain their own culture, and grow in numbers to the point where theirs is the dominant culture, similar to what's happening with Arab immigration in Europe.
Yes, I know this sounds somewhat similar to "Kaus's dystopia." But I think his concern is not that representatives speak accented English, but that they won't bother to speak English at all.
  • That illegal immigration will depress the market for unskilled labor.

Now, Kaus may still be wrong. But I think his concerns merit a better response than a description of now nice and colorful Latin neighborhoods are.

You can drop me a note at johnmcg@gmail.com.

I'm up for keeping the lights on, and adding content, but not much more. I'm espcially not sure how the whole del.ico.us thing works, so I probably wouldn't keep that up, and I'm not sure the traffic reporting is of much value.

I'm with John, leave it up and contribute content for now. As far as the del.ici.ous thing, I've nary a clue on that.

One think I think I will do if there's no objections is turn off word verification for comments. I've had haloscan comments on my (not oft-visited) blog for a few years, and think I've had to clear one spam comment.

If it becomes a problem we can always turn it back on. But for now, I think all it is is a pain.
